Dynamic Baselines That Reflect Real-World Decisions

Baselines are the invisible foundation of the VCM. They define “what would have happened anyway,” and set how many credits a project can issue. Here’s how Sky Harvest makes this process accurate and transparent with real-time, dynamic baselining.

The Status Quo: Static Baselines

Most nature-based credits still use static, historical baselines—assumptions frozen in time that drift as markets and land conditions change. In practice, this creates distortions and fuels over-crediting claims.

Newer “dynamic” methods help, but many compare project lands to “similar properties” and use their average carbon stock as the baseline. Statistically, any given area has ~50% odds of beating an average—even without a project. Developers can select areas that outpace the baseline, introducing selection bias and more over-crediting.

The result: a system easy to game, with credits that don’t always reflect reality.

Sky Harvest: Dynamic Baselining

We embrace dynamic baselining, but go deeper. Sky Harvest models decisions at the level landowners actually make them: each stand of timber. We integrate real-time variables—timber prices, stand maturity, market access, distance to mill, and dozens more—to reflect the true economic alternative a landowner faces.

By anchoring baselines in real, current trade-offs, we eliminate guesswork and shrink room for gaming. The outcome is more accurate issuances—and a new standard for transparency, fairness, and trust.

We’re not here just to perform in today’s market. We’re here to ensure tomorrow’s market works for everyone—buyers, landowners, and the climate

Whether you’re ready to purchase True Credits or just have a question, we’d love to hear from you.
