Our Methodology
Why a new methodology
We were unsatisfied with existing methodologies and unwilling to lower our standards. We couldn’t see a scalable path to solving climate change while using carbon credits rooted in speculative promises of future impact. And we couldn’t tolerate partial offsetting due to mismatches between the duration of carbon credits and carbon emissions.
Time-tested science
So, we wrote a new methodology that is exclusively backwards looking (no speculative promises) and offsets 100% of each metric ton of CO2 emitted (no partial offsetting). This novel methodology is rooted in a highly quantitative, science-based approach developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the 1990s. Using revised radiative forcing models and advances in computing, we were the first to integrate the math into a continuous rather than discrete set of calculations to ensure that each credit equals and offsets the precise climate impact of emitting one metric ton of carbon dioxide. By applying the methodology exclusively to backwards looking carbon storage, we’ve solved the risks of impermanence and duration mismatching.
Precision
To go a level deeper, climate impact is measured along three dimensions, much like a cube. It can’t be measured any other way. However, today’s carbon market only measures one dimension. It’s like trying to measure the volume of a cube with just the width—it doesn’t work. To be honest, we were flabbergasted and sad when we realized this. It’s the reason we started Sky Harvest. Our new methodology aptly measures all three dimensions to issue precision carbon credits accordingly.
Universal applicability
More importantly, this novel approach is a more precise standard that is applicable to every type of carbon credit: direct air capture, afforestation, REDD+, etc. It is our vision that this approach will become the new norm in carbon markets, starting with Sky Harvest.
